The autism clock calculates the current estimated U.S. incidence of autism for children ages 3-22. It was developed to allow real-time access to the current Autism incidence. The U.S. Economic Cost is calculated using an estimate of USD $30,000 annually for each child.

The newest child count statistics for 2006 reports an increase in autism in Maine from 1473 to 1760, an increase of 287 children over the previous year.

**Calculation based on figures from Table 1. US Department of Education statistics on autism in children aged 6-21 served by Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that states a 1392% increase from 1992-93 to 2001-02. Using Maine Dept. of Education-EF-S-05 Report, Dec. 1, 2002 Child Count, State Totals Report by Disability and Age, The author made a new calculation based on an increase to 675 age 6-21; hence 1724%. The report total states 846 aged 3-21.

"That any group or program that gets money from the federal government must include people, who have disabilities, in taking part in and benefiting from its activities..."Any program that receives federal money must respect the civil rights of children by offering equal services and facilities or risk losing the funds. This includes early intervention services and all public schools. These programs must provide appropriate services... "Appropriate" here means having developed a written plan for inclusion, based on an evaluation conducted by qualified personnel ...Children over three... fall under the protection of the U.S. Department of Education regulations, written to implement Section 504 (FAQ1)."
